On February 21, 2017, I was so proud and nervous to try something different at my university's advising conference. It was especially exciting because not only was it our 20th Annual Advising Conference but NACADA Executive Director Charlie Nutt was our honored guest and keynote speaker. I was so excited I barely slept the night before which is something I don't recommend when you're scheduled to give two presentations during the conference. Nevertheless, I persevered and gave a presentation that included an interactive component that required art-making.
My presentation "Less Ebb More Flow: Creating and Optimal College Experience" spawned from my love of Mihaly Csikszentmihályi’s theory on Flow. If you haven't heard of Flow, then I recommend viewing Csikszentmihályi’s Ted Talk. It has helped me better understand myself as an artist and human being. In turn, I am better able to connect with students. This is a brief section of my abstract: In this session, attendees will learn about Mihaly Csikszentmihályi’s mental state of flow. We will discuss questions of personal contributions to the college experience and student exposure to campus community members with optimal experiences in their professions. Do students witness academic advisors “in their zone” or faculty in complete absorption of creativity and innovation? Furthermore, we will discuss what is possible when individuals and teams are working with less ebb and more flow in the workplace. The session included a coloring book that I illustrated, a painting activity, and calm music. For a full run down of the presentation, feel free to check out my blog: http://ow.ly/IXYZ309hNUb

What artist(s) inspire you? I don't have the patience to try this myself, but M.C. Escher is one of my drawing inspirations. #saproart http://www.openculture.com/2016/08/watch-m-c-escher-make-his-final-artistic-creation-in-the-1971-documentary-adventures-in-perception.html
